Harvest Hosts counted roughly 6,000 Classic hosts, 3,300 Boondockers Welcome locations, 300 golf hosts, and 1,100 campground partners. All Access is the 9,700+ they advertise.
The rules that actually decide this
Harvest Hosts / Boondockers: self-contained rig only (interior toilet and onboard waste tanks). Tents, cars, rooftop tents out. Standard stay one night; some hosts allow up to four extra, sometimes for a fee. No outdoor cooking on the host’s property. No camping fee — hosts make money when you buy something; Harvest Hosts says they take no cut. “Happy Camper” refund: 3 months.
Passport America: 50% off the nightly rate only, not extras. Space available. Each park’s “Important Campground Notes” can limit nights, days, seasons, and how you reserve.
Thousand Trails Camping Pass: 14 nights in, then 7 nights out before the next stay over 4 nights. Book 60 days ahead. One of five regions (Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, Northeast, Southeast). $300-off promo ends Aug 31, 2026 — first year only, new customers, excludes MN, MS, and SD. Monthly payments lock a 2-year agreement. Money-back: 30 days or after no more than two consecutive nights, whichever comes first.
Break-even, without the brochure math
Assume a private campground is $50 a night. Your numbers will differ.
- Passport America at $49: one $50 night at 50% off saves $25. Two discounted nights cover the card. You still paid $25 to sleep there — cheap hookups, not free camping.
- Harvest Hosts Classic at $99: two avoided $50 nights cover the fee. You usually spend $20–$40 at the host; that still beats $50 if you were stopping anyway. It does not beat a free Forest Service pullout.
- HH + Boondockers at $169: worth it if you dry-camp well and want a booked driveway. Skip if you need hookups every night.
- Thousand Trails at $475 promo: ten avoided $50 nights cover year one. Full-timers in one zone who can live with 14/7 often print money. The $163–$313/month Journey/Explore/Adventure tiers are a different product (2-year minimum, down payment).
Who should buy which
Shorter stack: you probably need one membership, maybe two, not four.
What people mix up
All Access is not “better Thousand Trails.” Golf hosts and Escapees mail/community perks are not campground nights. Boondockers Welcome is someone’s property, not a small business expecting a customer — Harvest Hosts sells them as a bundle. The Camping Pass is one region unless you pay again; park-to-park (no gap week) is on the expensive monthly tiers, not this pass.
On I-5 through Oregon those three products are not substitutes: farm/winery nights, a coast-zone Camping Pass, or half-off parks.
On I-5 through California the trap flips: Central Valley miles, not wine-country Harvest Hosts — Thousand Trails Southwest is scattered off the interstate.
On I-10 from SoCal toward Arizona: desert snowbird parks, not a free Thousand Trails tunnel — Palm Desert is Southwest, most AZ parks are Collection.
